Course Description

The goal of this course is to help you understand the risks involved in working in situations where exposure is possible and the safety measures that employers and employees can take to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens. We will review the ways in which bloodborne pathogens are transmitted, the symptoms of exposure, the equipment that can remove or isolate the hazard from the workplace, and the practices that reduce the likelihood of exposure.

Who must take this training?

The Cal/OSHA bloodborne pathogen regulations, 8 CCR 5193, require employees in potentially affected industries to understand the epidemiology, symptoms, and mode of transmission of bloodborne pathogens.

How often is retraining or recertification required?

According to Title 8 CCR, Section 5193 (g) Communication of Hazards to Employees.
(B) Training shall be provided as follows:

  1. At the time of initial assignment to tasks where occupational exposure may take place;
  2. At least annually thereafter.

What are the governing regulations?

California has implemented its own OSHA-approved state regulations regarding bloodborne pathogens: California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5193, also known as 8 CCR 5193 for short. This course will focus on the Cal/OSHA regulations rather than the federal regulations.
